Traditional grammar classifies the words into different categories. These are called parts of speech; the eight parts of speech are: the verb, the noun, the pronoun, the adjective, the adverb, the preposition, the conjunction, and the interjection. Each part of speech explains how the word is used. In fact, the same word can be a noun in one sentence and a verb or adjective in the next.Tag is a keyword or term assigned to a piece of information. The process of marking up a single ‘word’, corresponding to a particular part of speech(like verb or noun) based on both its definition, as well as its context-i.e., relationship with adjacent and related words in a phrase, sentence, or paragraph, is known as Part of Speech Tagging (POST).
In computational Linguistics POS-tagging is done by using algorithms which associate discrete terms, as well as hidden parts of speech, in accordance with a set of descriptive tags.
Role of TDIL
POS Tagging standard is being formulated. However, POS taggers are developed for some Indian languages under Machine Translation project of TDIL.
